Log Cabins
Students, parents, and grandparents stepped back one hundred plus years to take a look at the 1800's. Fourth graders and their families were asked to design and construct a model of a log cabin from "pioneer times". The results were amazing! Pretzels, paper logs, cereal, scraps of wood, twigs, and many other natural fibers were used in creative ways to construct a model of a cabin. Not only did the students learn about life in the 1800's through this project, but they also acquired skills necessary for construction techniques, use of recycled materials, and problem solving. Creative solutions were used for the "chinking" of the cabins. Puff paint, spackle compound, salt dough, and mud and glue were used to fill in the cracks of the log cabins. This type of project helps to make learning relevant to students. Several students commented that they had a good time doing this project with their parents and grandparents.
