Walk for Better Health

April 25, 2018

Let’s take a walk April 25, National Walk at Lunch Day

Last year, Meridian Public Schools participated in the walk and received a $1,000 grant from BCBSNE for their physical education department. The rural school purchased scooters, balls, bats and bases.  (See picture with Mr. Kort and Kathy Houser presenting him the check.)  (See pictures with students on the scooters that were purchased.)

“Thank you for the gift,” Kathy Houser, Meridian Public Schools, said. “The ability to play with new and safe equipment is always a positive feature in rural schools who struggle with budgets.”

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) is again encouraging Nebraskans to take 30 minutes, anytime, anyplace, on Wednesday, April 25, to go for a walk and celebrate National Walk at Lunch Day.

“Taking a walk a day is kind of like eating an apple a day; it may keep the doctor away,” said Dr. Debra Esser, BCBSNE’s chief medical officer.  “It helps you lose weight and de-stress, lowers your blood pressure and can reduce your risk of chronic diseases.”

With just 30 minutes of walking every day you can:

· Improve your mood

· Prevent or manage health conditions including heart disease, high blood press and type 2 diabetes

· Strengthen your bones and muscles

· Improve your balance and coordination

Individuals, businesses, and corporations statewide are participating in National Walk at Lunch Day.  Schools from McCook, Arapahoe, Scottsbluff, Cozad and Millard are also joining in.

BCBSNE again this year will award a $1,000 grant to a school participating in National Walk at Lunch Day this year.

To participate in National Walk at Lunch Day, just pledge to walk at https://www.nebraskablue.com/walk.  It’s free.

When you sign up, BCBSNE will donate $1 per individual and $20 per group or organization to Special Olympics Nebraska.

Attached are some elementary shots of the students participating in the Walk For Lunch Day on Wednesday.  We have two faithful teachers who walk every morning.  Mrs. Henry and Mrs. Meyer are having fun while walking that morning.  Elementary students walked indoors as the weather was damp and rainy.  They walked in line with some students moving faster that others.
