LINCOLN, NE — The Nebraska School Activities Association is honored to recognize Kathy Houser of Meridian Public Schools as this week’s Above and Beyond Award nominee. With over 50 years of service as the school secretary - and a lifetime of community dedication - Kathy has become an irreplaceable pillar of both the school and the surrounding area. Kathy is far more than a secretary. She is the heart and soul of Meridian - someone who students turn to on their hardest days and who has spent countless hours volunteering her time, energy, and compassion. Whether she’s staying late to help students with assignments, offering a kind word in the hallway, or helping ensure a student stays on the path to graduation, Kathy consistently puts others before herself. She is also a tireless supporter of school and community events, often found taking tickets at football games, coordinating programs, and contributing her organizational talents to make everything run smoothly. Her involvement extends far beyond the school walls. Kathy plays an active role in the Daykin Community Club, St. John's Lutheran Church, the Daykin Legion Auxiliary, Meridian Partners in Education (M-PIE), and any local benefit or event where help is needed. One of her most meaningful contributions has been her work on the school’s Veterans Day program, where she helped introduce the Quilt of Valor initiative. Thanks to her community knowledge and connections, over 20 local veterans have already been honored—with more to come. Her ability to build relationships and bridge school and community is unmatched. Generations of Meridian students and families have been influenced by Kathy’s presence, wisdom, and unwavering support. She is the go-to person for staff, a trusted mentor to students, and a selfless volunteer who gives without expecting recognition. Kathy Houser truly embodies what it means to go above and beyond. Her impact is lasting, her heart is immense, and her legacy is woven into the very fabric of the Meridian community.
