The student council -- weekly feature on Wednesdays to share with our families and community.

Wednesday Weekly Feature

#8 Wednesday Weekly Feature

The weekly feature is back, and we are recognizing the junior high sports coaches. Mrs. Schropfer, Mr. Adam, Mr. Baber, Mr. Sobotka, Ms. Drees, and Mr. Asche all work with the junior high students to expose them to the benefits of sports. After interviewing each coach, it is very evident that they truly enjoy the sports they coach.

We asked each coach what their favorite Christmas movie is. Mrs. Schropfer likes How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Mr. Adam’s favorite is Diehard. Mr. Baber’s favorite Christmas movie is Klaus, and Mr. Sobotka and Ms. Drees both picked Home Alone. We hope they were able to watch their favorite movie during the break. Thanks for coaching our young athletes!

Here is a picture of the new face in junior high sports—Mr. Asche with the junior high basketball team.

#7 Wednesday Weekly Feature

The bus drivers are highlighted in this week’s feature. Charles, Janelle, Mrs. Noel, Tonya, and Wendy get Meridian students where they need to be. We asked them how long they have been driving buses for Meridian and what they enjoy about being a bus driver. Both Charles and Janelle have been driving the bus for around twenty years. Charles enjoys coming home with an empty bus. Janelle’s favorite part of being a bus driver is seeing the kids change and grow up before her eyes. Mrs. Noel has been bus driving for approximately 15 years and enjoys well-behaved, friendly children. Tonya said that she started bus driving around 2013. She jokingly said that her favorite part is being the boss, but her actual favorite part is seeing the kids grow and change. Wendy is in her fourth year driving the bus for Meridian, and she enjoys decorating her bus. We love her decorations, too! Thank you, bus drivers, for getting everyone where they need to be safely and doing it with a smile!

#6 Wednesday Weekly Feature

This week’s feature highlights the wonderful cooks who make sure all the students and staff are well fed.  Elaine, Kim, and Shari all work hard to provide food that is nutritious for students and tasty too.

We asked them what their favorite part of serving students is and what their favorite meal is. Elaine said that she likes to see how the kids have changed over the summer, and her favorite meal is bunzas. Kim said that she enjoys seeing all of the students’ lovely faces and she likes all of the meals. Shari’s favorite part is listening to the students’ comments as they go by, and her favorite meal is spaghetti. Thank you, cooks, for all that you do!

#5 Wednesday Weekly Feature

This week we want to feature the maintenance staff who works hard to keep Meridian running. Mike and Rick are committed to making sure the school is a clean and well-run environment for students. However, they have differing opinions when it comes to what their favorite part of working at Meridian is. Mike enjoys summer break so he can work on projects at the school. Meanwhile, Rick’s favorite part is the kids.

Meridian is thankful to have Mike and Rick, who are willing to do the heavy lifting and dirty work with a smile on their face. The students and staff can always count on these two for set-up, clean-up, and anything in between. And if they aren’t fixing or cleaning something, they are sharing a laugh with students and staff. Thanks for keeping our building running!

# 4 Wednesday Weekly Feature

The high school volleyball team has been led by some pretty great coaches. They have put in many hours over the summer and fall. These coaches have worked hard to help the team grow together and as individuals.

When asked why she enjoys coaching volleyball, Coach Mary explained that it’s a team sport that takes a bunch of individual skills put together, and it is awesome to experience the playing together with momentum and emotion. Coach Brooke stated that she coaches because she wants to make a positive impact on youth by sharing what a good work ethic and a positive attitude can do on/off the court. Ms. Drees answered by sharing that she enjoys the bus rides and believes that some of the biggest lessons in athletics are learned off the court.

Of course, we had to ask what the coaches’ favorite positions in volleyball are! Coach Mary favors playing as a hitter but likes coaching setters and liberos because they can make a huge difference. Coach Brooke’s favorite position is blockers because they can be huge momentum shifters just by doing their job. Ms. Drees’ favorite position is the libero.
Thank you, coaches! You had a great season!

#3  Wednesday Weekly Feature

As the football season wraps up, we want to spotlight the football coaches this week.

These three coaches put in many hours and energy helping our young men grow as football players and student-athletes. We asked them why they like coaching, and Mr. Adam said that his favorite part of being a Meridian football coach is working with the kids. Mr. Placek’s love of the game and the competition is his favorite part of coaching. Mr. Baber’s favorite part of coaching football is working with student-athletes and forming a bond with them.

And why wouldn’t we ask football coaches who their favorite NFL teams are?? Mr. Adam cheers for the Dallas Cowboys. Mr. Placek’s favorites are the 49ers and Chiefs, and Mr. Baber is a Chiefs fan!

#2 Wednesday Weekly Feature

A big thank you goes out to the three secretaries at Meridian for all that they do for us.

Kathy Houser has been a part of the Meridian staff for 52 years. She was offered a job as a teacher aide and secretary right out of high school because she had worked here during summer school. She loves the students and patrons of Meridian. When asked to describe herself in one word, Kathy replied with adaptability because she can go anywhere that she is needed.

Trish Endorf has been working as a secretary at Meridian for 12 years. She likes living half a mile away and working with the kids. When asked to describe herself, Trish explained that she is particular.

Kelly Kanost is in her third school year of working at the school. She enjoys working with children and families as well as getting to know everyone. Kelly used willing to help to describe herself.

Mustang Nation, this week we want to highlight our superintendent and principal who have been serving our school for 8 years!

Mr. Kort said that he was drawn to the Meridian family because of the timing of the superintendent opening as well as the size and how good of a fit it was for his family. During his free time, he enjoys golfing and spending time on the lake. Mr. Scott has always been a part of a small school and likes the especially strong family feeling of Meridian where high school students help the younger students.

Outside of school, Mr. Scott enjoys spending time with his 5 grandchildren and the rest of his family along with being involved in community theater in Lincoln.

Thank you, Mr. Kort and Mr. Scott for all that you do.
