Pirate attack on the highwire

Nebraska State Fair

September 05, 2013

The Nebraska State Fair boasts that it is the largest classroom in Nebraska. Third and fourth graders had an opportunity to test that theory. What they discovered was a day full of opportunities. The State Fair's theme this year for younger children centered around pirates. What child isn't fascinated by pirates! Our students watched pirates battle on the highwire and perform daring escapes and tricks on a rolling wheel. They ventured into the Children's Pavillion where they created pirate eye patches, searched for pieces of eight (pirate coins), raced ships and cars, walked the plank, and built tall look-out towers. The 4-H building centered around entomology. Students spent time with hands-on activities creating art projects and stamp art of an insect's life cycle. They also had the opportunity to observe and handle live insects. After lunch, students visited various booths along the fairway participating in the activities each booth offered. Students took a chance on the wheel answering questions about agriculture in order to win a prize. They sampled food made from wheat and soybeans. They observed bees in their hives. They visited the petting zoo where they learned about unique animals from other countries. If you get tired just reading this, then you will understand why we had a quiet bus ride back to Meridian. We aprreciated the opportunity to explore such a rich environment!
