Meridian Public School was established in 1967. At a special election on April 18, 1967, the Alexandria, Daykin, and Tobias school patrons voted 587 for and 90 against reorganizing the three school districts into one. Today Meridian is a PreK-12 school educating approximately 170 students, with 25 professional staff, and 22 support staff. Our school is made up of four communities: Alexandria, Daykin, Tobias, and Western which are located in three different counties. Why Meridian Public School? In the mid-1850's, a community formed on the banks of the Little Blue River about seven miles south of the present-day school. It was named Meridian because of it's proximity to the 6th principal meridian. The original town of Meridian was directly east of Alexandria and is directly south to the current Meridian School. The Meridian village flourished for 20 years, as it was a stop on the Oregon Trail and the seat of Jones County (now Jefferson and Thayer counties); then it dwindled away after the new railroad bypassed it. Many of the buildings in the village of Meridian were moved to the present village of Alexandria in 1872 as the railroad came through that area instead. In 1967 when the school district was formed, Nebraska's 1967 centennial was approaching. New consolidations such as Centennial and Centura, chose names to mark the year. Meridian's school name honors that early and historic community of Meridian, Nebraska. The Meridian Bridge nearby is also a landmark of the area and has become a favorite attraction of Meridian's history. |
