Students Explore Wind Energy
High School shop students and the fourth and fifth grade science class have joined together to discover the unique benefits of renewable resources. The hands-on activities allowed students to explore aerodynamic wind blades. Students designed wind blades and then measured how fast they moved and whether or not they had enough "tork" to lift weight. Mr. Smith continued to challenged groups of students by asking them to design a wind turbine that could float as well as continue to spin. Undaunted by the task, students set to work first sketching a possible design and then building the design. Several groups had to go back to the drawing board to "rethink" the design. Designs continued to change until students successfully discovered a solution that worked!! Students also received an education about our local wind turbine by going out to the football practice field to plot and measure the energy generated from Meridian's turbine. Students gained a better understanding of the limitless ideas that "wind energy" can generate.
