DAYKIN — Daykin Meridian’s Mustangs ran away from their counterparts from McCool Junction Saturday, 55-0.

The Mustangs scored early and often, leading 24-0 at the end of the first quarter and 49-0 at halftime.

“We ran and passed very effectively against their defense,” Meridian coach Clint Jones said.

Meridian finished with 399 total offensive yards, while holding McCool Junction to 75.

Defensively, Jones said the Mustangs did a “great job” up front against McCool Junction’s running game.

Meridian’s Brian Heiserman opened the game’s scoring with a three-yard run. Jonah Jordening ran in the two-point conversion, making it a 8-0 game with 9:59 left in the first quarter.

Ryan Meyer put the Mustangs on the board again with 7:30 left in the first period with a 36-yard touchdown run. Heiserman added the two-point conversion on a run for a 14-0 lead.

With 3:29 left in the first quarter, Heiserman scored on a 51-yard run and Meyer added the two-point conversion on a run, giving the Mustangs a 24-0 lead.

Meyer scored twice early in the second quarter on runs of 12 and four yards. Both PAT kick attempts failed, leaving the score at 36-0.

Jordening found the end zone on a one-yard run with 2:29 left in the second quarter and, after a failed PAT kick attempt, the Mustangs led 42-0.

Meyer scored his third touchdown of the second quarter and fourth of the game as time expired in the first half. Dustin Rohr kicked the PAT, giving Meridian the 49-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs added a touchdown on a 14-yard run by Josh Lundholm. The PAT kick failed, leaving the final score at 55-0.

The Mustangs rushing attack was led by Ryan Meyer, who had 11 carries for 135 yards.

In all, Meridian finished with nine ballcarriers with positive yardage in the game.

Jordening was 2-for-3 in passing for 54 yards with Dustin Rohr catching one pass for 32 yards and Shane Roesler catching one for 22 yards.

Heiserman and Brant Stewart led Meridian’s defense with six solo tackles each.

Next action for Meridian, 2-0, will be Friday as the Mustangs host Johnson-Brock.
