Meridian Speech Team
Competes at the Deshler Tournament
The Meridian Mustang Speech Team made their
season debut at the ten-team Dragon Speech Invitational in Deshler
on Saturday, January 24. Twenty-six Mustang speakers participated
and earned 16 medals.
Leading the team with a three medal-performance was senior Kaitlyn
Meyer, who earned a first place medal in poetry, a second place in
duet with her partner Reid VanWesten, and a sixth place in serious
prose. The team also had a pair of seniors turning in two-medal
performances: senior Mariah Filipi was a member of the championship
OID and a third place medalist in Poetry; senior Logan Bartels
earned medals in OID(1st ) and Humorous Impromptu (4th). The other
medalists for the Mustangs were the following speakers: Andrew
Rohr, senior (1st OID); Billie Wassom, senior (3rd persuasive);
Taylor Johnson, junior 1st OID; Dustin Rohr, junior (1st OID); Erin
Bartels, junior (3rd informative); Evan Bartels, sophomore (2nd
humorous impromptu); Allison Johnson, sophomore (6th informative);
and Ashley Hansel, freshman (6th persuasive).
Many of the Mustangs were close to breaking finals and/or earned
superior ratings on their performances. Other Meridian performers
and their events included the following speakers: Danielle Aldrich,
Brooke Hofstetter, and Sydne Endorf, extemporaneous; Taylor Johnson
and Brianna Jackson, persuasion; Randii Endorf, Haley Dutton and
Sydne Endorf, serious prose; Evan Bartels and Crystal Brakhage,
duet; Chelsea Roesler, Emily Aude, Crystal Brakhage, Allison
Johnson, and Riley Brakhage, humorous prose; Hailey Kaderabek and
Kyle Rohr, Informative; Sondra McCord, Dustin Rohr, and Hailey
Kaderabek, entertainment.
Several Mustang fans came to the snowy Saturday tournament,
including the volunteer judges for the squad who were Lorrie
Hofstetter, René Scheer, David Summers, Dennis Toalson, and Brenda
Williams. The team expressed their appreciation for this support
and invite interested Mustang fans to their next tournament on
Saturday, January 31. This is the MUDECAS Tournament at SCC in
Beatrice.
