Regular Meeting
The Meridian Public Schools Board of Education met on Monday, August 18, 2008, as per public notice published in the August 13, 2008 issue of the Fairbury Journal News.
President Mussman called the regular meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. Members present were Baxa, Mussman, Miller, Wolfe, Jackson, and Johnson. Also present were Superintendent Rother and Lonnie Schwisow.
Wolfe moved and Baxa seconded to approve the consent agenda as follows:
1. Minutes of the July 21, 2008 Regular Meeting
2. District financial report
3. Activity fund report
4. Hot lunch fund report
5. Bills
Motion carried 6-0.
Baxa moved and Miller seconded to approve the 2008-2009 bus routes as presented by Mr. Rother. Motion carried 6-0.
Miller moved and Wolfe seconded to approve the purchase of six Motorola 385 cell phones at $19.95 each from U.S. Cellular for the school district transportation and communications systems. Motion carried 6-0.
In the absence of Mr. Stauss, Mr. Rother reported on the following:
1. Staff development
2. Admission prices for 2008-2009
3. 2008-2009 substitute teacher pay
4. Policy on allowing students to charge meals
Jackson moved and Wolfe seconded to increase substitute teacher
pay for 2008-2009 to $96 per day. The pay for ½ day will remain at
$50. Motion carried 5-0 with Mussman abstaining.
Mr. Rother reported on the following:
1. Building improvement bonds funding and HVAC systems progress
report
2. Proposed Budget of Expenditures for 2008-2009
3. Mechanic’s inspections of buses and vans
4. Replacement of carpet in elementary hallway
5. Proposal to upgrade sound system in the gym
6. NASB Area Membership Meetings
7. Replacement of stage curtains
8. ACT testing – five year comparison
Mr. Rother recognized the student council members, sponsored by Bobette Toalson, who volunteered to do landscaping work at the school on Sunday, August 17. The students involved were Amanda Arnold, Logan Bartels, Mariah Filipi, Seth Gurley, Kaitlyn Meyer, Billie Wassom, Erin Bartels, Taylor Johnson, Evan Bartels, Angela Durflinger, Allison Johnson, Kyle Rohr, Blake Bartels, Melanie Baxa, and Drew Endorf. The students hauled and spread wood chips, trimmed bushes, updated the marquee, and picked up trash.
The Annual Budget Hearing was set for Monday, September 15, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and the Annual Tax Levy Setting Hearing was scheduled for Monday, September 15, 2008 at 7:15 p.m.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education was scheduled
for Monday,
September 15 at 7:30 p.m. Johnson moved and Jackson seconded to
adjourn the meeting at
10.15 p.m. Motion carried 6-0.
